Karyn Wells Consultancy offers various services to non-government organisations, government departments and individuals. For over 22 years Karyn Wells has worked within the child protection sector across a variety of roles. Karyn states that her passion for the safety of children and young people continues to grow and she never ceases to be impressed by the paralleled passion and commitment of foster carers, government and non-government workers with whom she works alongside in this sector.

“I am as passionate today as the first day I started as a young 21 year old. For the last four years, I have been operating my own consultancy business andI work with non-government and government organisations at both strategic and operational levels. I assist organisations to develop and implement instructional documents to deliver quality practice, including compliance with the Human Service Quality Framework (HSQF). I also develop individualised leadership and learning programs and convene family group meetings to meet the unique needs of organisations.”

Karyn Wells Consultancy also provides child protection expertise by reviewing complex cases and complaints in order to provide recommendations that guide decision making. “I enjoy working directly with children, families and foster carers as this keeps me grounded and connected with the 'real' work. I continue to be humbled by the amazing skill base of workers and the commitment of foster carers who are focused on keeping children safe whilst working with them to achieve their potential” says Karyn.

With a professional background that encompasses both Social Work and Human Resources, Karyn offers assistance to organisations streamlining instructional documents as well as tailor made leadership programs for staff. She also focuses on Human Resource (HR) assistance.

Furthermore, she is committed to ongoing training and development opportunities for staff and carers. As such the following courses are on offer by her consultancy:

  • Supporting Foster Carers
  • Operational, Strategic and Business Planning
  • Change Management
  • Myers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) identification for workers and carers
  • Motivating staff
  • Time Management

Karyn reflects on the outcomes so far with regard to the recommendations of the Carmody Report, Taking Responsibility: A Roadmap for Queensland Child Protection (June, 2013) with regard to the recommendations and the impacts on her organisation and the sector. Karyn notes that the Carmody Inquiry was tasked with conducting a far reaching review of Queensland's child protection system and proposed recommendations to improve the system. “The department's new strengthening families, protecting children framework for practice, has guided and influenced my consultancy’s framework for practice. Empowerment of families and stakeholders is at the forefront of all that we undertake in this work. This is achieved through ensuring all voices are heard and stakeholders are provided with opportunities to engage without fear of judgement.”

Contracting independent family group meeting convenors was another Carmody recommendation. This has enabled Karyn Wells Consultancy to provide experienced and skilled convenors to ensure appropriate preparation and planning time is provided to families whilst also ensuring that family strengths are a focal point for consideration.

Karyn has observed many positive outcomes in Queensland's new child protection system. “There is a greater focus on participation of children and families, strength based practice and more support for kinship care placements with a focus on keeping children within their home.” Whilst celebrating the improvements, Karyn remains cognisant that challenges remain: “There are competing demands of managing complex work and the implementation of new frameworks. While improvements have been made with information sharing between government and non-government organisations, further improvements are required.”

Karyn’s consultancy also offers coaching for individuals and teams which includes individual and team executive coaching programs that use cutting edge leadership and self-awareness tools to improve performance and outputs. Motivational sessions for individuals to achieve personal and professional goals are also provided.

Leadership and team development are also key focal aspects of Karyn Wells Consultancy. She provides tailor made leadership programs and workshops with the aim to develop high performing teams. Her organisation also facilitates team training and strategic planning day sessions as well as developing inspirational business plans to assist teams in on going improvement.
